The Language of Landscaping
Every human endeavor has its own special code or language that one must be familiar with if one wishes to master that endeavor. The same holds true with landscaping. Landscaping is more than just moving around rocks and plants to make a space pretty.
Landscaping is part science and part art, and is indelibly enmeshed in modern human life because we like being in control of our living spaces. When designing an outdoor space, you must be aware of the essential elements that come into play.
The first element is color. The dominant color of any given space dictates what type of mood or energy it is trying to evoke. Hot colors, like orange and red, increase the appetite and also increase the heart rate, because they are very stimulating colors.
If an outdoor space is dedicated to activities, and having fun with family and friends, then hot colors can be used to boost the jovial atmosphere of that space. Cool colors, like green, brown, and blue, are used to create peace and quiet in a particular space.
The next element is scale. How large should the space be? Should it cover all the available space, or only a third of it? Scale must be determined beforehand, to ensure that the target output is achieved more easily.
The third essential element is texture. What determines texture when you are landscaping? If you are using a lot of plants, then the texture of a given space will be determined by the size, volume, and shape of the leaves of the available plants.
If you are using materials like rocks, texture will be determined by the visual impact of the material in relation to the surrounding environment (e.g. the flooring of the space).
