Landscaping Ideas Issue 1 | Page 7

The most common question that people ask me is whether they should focus on form first before function. Should aesthetics have precedence over the actual function of an outdoor space?

From my own experience of landscaping, the most effective approach is to figure out the function first, before trying to decorate a space. Why? Because, if you do not know exactly what a space is for, you will not be able to plan your project well. You have to know exactly what a space is for before you can begin thinking of the materials and plants that you are going to use.

Now, some of you might be thinking: what if an outdoor space is primarily for a physical activity, like a barbecue area or a play area for the kids? In such situations, 90% of your initial focus should be on function and safety.

For example, if you are planning to create a barbecuing station, you have to keep in mind that anything near fire can catch on fire. You have to make sure that your barbecue pit or grilling station is as far away as possible from possible fuel sources, such as orchids or natural canopies.

If an outdoor space will serve no other function other than to beautify your landscape, then you can focus on the visual aspects of that space instead. You can expend your energy on balancing colors and determining the perfect mixture of plants to achieve desired effects.
