SPORTS & PLAY
BRINGING PLAY TO THE HEART OF THE CONVERSATION and emotional wellbeing. Through play, children learn to navigate challenges, build confidence, develop friendships and explore the world around them.
Yet access to quality play opportunities is not equal across all communities.
Many children face barriers to play, whether through a lack of accessible facilities, limited outdoor spaces or environments that do not meet the needs of children with different abilities. Creating opportunities for all children to play is not just desirable; it is essential.

Play is woven into childhood memories, yet its value is often underestimated when conversations turn to policy, planning and investment. Held on Global Parents Day, the event provided an opportunity to celebrate the important role parents and caregivers play in supporting children’ s development, while also highlighting how play contributes to healthier, happier and more connected communities. For Wicksteed, the invitation represented something much bigger than a single event. It was an opportunity to help ensure that play remains part of the national conversation.
Why Play Matters For over 150 years, Wicksteed has been dedicated to creating spaces where children can play, learn and thrive. Throughout that time, one thing has remained constant: play is not simply recreation. It is an essential part of childhood development.
Research consistently shows that play supports physical health, social development, creativity, resilience
