DECKING

5 REASONS TO USE DECK JOIST TAPE

Deck joist tape should be a requirement for anyone installing a new deck. The majority of substructures are built using timber and, if not properly protected, they can start showing signs of splitting, rotting and decay in as little as eight years. This is due to substructures being subjected to the outdoor elements year-round, making them highly susceptible to moisture. A smart, simple and cost-effective solution, protecting a substructure with joist tape can significantly extend the life of a deck.
Five reasons to use deck joist tape: 1. It protects from moisture Applying a deck joist tape shields the tops of joists, rim joists, ledger boards and beams from moisture. This prevents water from penetrating the substructure through screw holes, which eventually leads to rot and decay. 2. It holds screws in place longer
Applying a butyl-based tape, like Trex ® Protect, on top of joists and beams effectively seals deck fasteners and helps screws hold longer and stronger. This is because, as well as preventing moisture penetration, the tape defends against splitting of the wood caused by seasonal freezing and thawing. 3. It’ s easy to apply Joist tapes typically come in a peeland-stick format, making them easy to install. Options that lie directly on the boards also involve minimal overlap, meaning fewer cuts are needed. Better yet are tapes with a non-skid surface, which are safer to walk across during application. 4. It’ s affordable For a typical 12 ft x 24 ft deck, contractors may need only a few rolls of deck joist tape like Trex Protect, with the total cost usually under £ 120. Why build a deck with highperformance composite boards that come with up to 50-year limited residential warranties – as Trex boards do – if there’ s a risk the foundation will start to decay in eight years? 5. It offers a strong return on investment Adding a deck using performanceengineered boards from Trex ® to a home is a smart investment and can add to a home’ s resale value. Using a deck joist tape helps to extend the life of a substructure, ensuring homeowners can maximise their return on investment.
