CREATING THE ULTIMATE INDOOR-OUTDOOR FLOW FROM THE LIVING SPACE THROUGH TO THE GARDEN?
Gone are the days of wanting lots of separate rooms. Today, open-plan spaces that flow effortlessly into one another and extend seamlessly into the garden offer homeowners the greatest flexibility and appeal. But how do you create the perfect indoor-outdoor flow? I’ m Costel Radescu, founder of the CR Group and here’ s my guide to creating the perfect indoor-outdoor flow for your home.
Define your space When opting for open plan living, you’ ll still need to create zoned areas. Whether that’ s creating a dining space, a cosy living room area or even an office. While you might not want walls, you can still create zones by the clever placement of furniture to create boundaries between the spaces, or even using slats, which can be opened or closed to create a degree of separation between the spaces.
Having zoned areas will make the space feel bigger, and you won’ t miss the walls. It also means that different people can use the space at the same time without being on top of each other.
Think about light The minute you think of indooroutdoor flow, your mind probably goes to bifold doors. Without doubt, these will offer you the maximum amount of flexibility in the space and give you that true indooroutdoor flow into the garden.
While bifolds will let a lot of light in, if you’ re working with a deeper room, you’ ll still need zoned lighting for the rest of the space to feel as light.
You can create a seamless flow by mixing the same metals and finishes you use inside in your garden area. If you’ re opting for matt black taps and lights, then matt black lanterns in your garden space will tie everything together.
Light can also be too much, especially if you’ re south-facing, so also think about whether you’ ll need curtains or some form of blind to keep the sun out when it gets too much.
Flooring The easiest, but not the cheapest way to create a seamless flow is by having the same flooring inside as you do in your outside space.
