The reduced performance of the joint material only becomes apparent after some time and dependent on the severity of exposure in service conditions, often after just one or two winters, when the compromised joints begin to visibly deteriorate and erode, crack, and then fully breakdown. Cleaning with high pressure jetwashing and mechanical street cleaners in public areas, accelerates this deterioration, with the mode of progressive breakdown being the same as for non-compromised joints, but far, far quicker.
