ON STUNNING GARDEN ROOM PROJECT THEY BUILT FROM SCRATCH
Garden rooms are a dream addition to any home. But while many are drawn to the idea, the cost of hiring professionals can quickly turn that dream into a pricey reality.
One thrifty couple from Solihull took matters into their own hands and built their dream garden room from scratch— saving tens of thousands in the process.
Louise Peer, 46, is mum to a 6-yearold and works full-time. After two years of working from home from a tiny desk in a dark bedroom, Louise and her husband, Ewan, 41, set out to create a multi-functional garden room designed for home working, relaxing, and entertaining.
She told Factory Direct Flooring:“ We had a bad experience with builders when we renovated our home a few years ago. They told us an extension would take eight weeks, and six months later it still wasn’ t done. So when it was time for a garden room, we didn’ t want to face a similar experience and decided to project-manage and build everything ourselves.“ We’ re completely self-taught; my husband has always been really handy by nature, and watched
YouTube videos for anything he didn’ t know how to do. The only things we called professionals in for were the electrics and plastering— literally everything else was DIY. Even with a more complicated herringbone design, laying our flooring was easy and took less than a day, thanks to clear instructions. We chose LVT because it’ s water resistant, robust, and less sensitive to temperature variations.”
Had Louise and Ewan gone down the professional route, they estimate it would have cost them £ 35,000 + to build the garden room to the same high specification they’ ve achieved, and that’ s before they decorated and furnished the interior. All in, they estimate they spent £ 18k, saving around 50 %.
