BOUND SURFACING
PROJECT SPOTLIGHT:
WAKEHURST PLACE – FIVE YEARS ON
In 2018, Addagrip was proud to contribute to an important surfacing project at Wakehurst Place— a 500- acre wild botanic garden in West Sussex, owned by the National Trust and managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Home to the Millennium Seed Bank, the site is internationally recognised for its role in plant conservation and research.
The project involved renovating over 450 linear metres of footpaths in Bethlehem Woods, an area requiring a surface that could withstand heavy use, offer year-round accessibility, and complement the sensitive woodland surroundings. Drainage, minimal ground disturbance, and visual harmony were all key considerations. Our Terrabase system was the perfect fit. Designed for areas where traditional surfacing isn’ t suitable, Terrabase provides a robust, decorative finish without the need for a macadam base. Installed over a mix of substrates— including a cellular confinement system to protect tree roots— the surface allowed for efficient lateral drainage while minimising disruption to the landscape.
The chosen blend, Oak, was selected for its warm, natural tone that complements the woodland environment. Over 1,300m ² of Terrabase was installed by Addagrip approved contractor Limegate Ltd, delivering a seamless, permeable surface that is both low maintenance and suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
Now, five years on, we’ re pleased to report that the surface is still performing exceptionally well— handling footfall, weather, and time with ease. It’ s a great example of how the right system can provide long-term performance and blend beautifully into even the most sensitive natural settings.”
