REIMAGINING THE MUGA – THE ROUTE TO BETTER TEENAGE PLAY PROVISION
Public spaces have long been the backbone of community interaction . But recent studies revealed that 90 % of teenage play areas are dominated by boys , leaving girls feeling unwelcome and unsafe ( Parkwatch Report , 2023 ). With traditional facilities such as skateparks , shelters , and multi-use games areas ( MUGAs ) catering only to specific interests , a considerable portion of the population seems to be forgotten . Something new is needed to bridge the gap , provide a more inclusive space , and to give local authorities the tools to ensure that community needs are met . One proposed solution is a new style of MUGA , one that aims to reimagine public spaces as vibrant hubs of inclusivity , empowerment , and community engagement . Jupiter Play and Leisure have developed a framework for this new type of MUGA , that they call KORE .
How it works KORE ’ s approach lies in its adaptability and user-centered design . As a modular system , KORE grants the ability to reimagine a space over time and easily integrates into existing environments . The cornerstone of this innovation is the KORE KONNEX consultation process , which puts the power of design into the hands of the end users .
The KORE KONNEX consultation begins with an interactive and engaging activity . Participants are given a series of tiles , each representing a different play kit or feature , alongside a blank grid . These tiles showcase a diverse range of options , including :
