To address the need for more inclusive seating , we recommended the use of our Railroad range with a 700mm depth , which allows for seating on both sides of the bench . This design choice effectively doubled the seating capacity without increasing the physical footprint of the installation . Additionally , some benches were equipped with backrests and armrests , making them accessible to elderly individuals and those with mobility issues . This inclusivity ensured that the space could be enjoyed by everyone , regardless of physical ability .
Outcome and Impact The revitalised Canterbury High Street has quickly become a cherished part of the city ’ s urban landscape . The new seating provides much-needed rest spots beneath the shade of Canterbury ’ s historic trees , allowing visitors to take a break from shopping or simply enjoy a moment of calm in the bustling city centre . The design ’ s success is evident in the way the space is now used — residents and visitors alike have embraced it as a place of pause and reflection .
Local feedback has been overwhelmingly positive . Shoppers , burdened with bags , appreciate the opportunity to rest outdoors : “ It ’ s our favourite part of the town centre regeneration ,” one shopper noted . “ We like being able to take a break from shopping outside . The area is used so much more with the added seating . We often arrange to meet each other on one of the benches .” Similarly , local workers have found a new favourite spot to unwind during their lunch breaks . One shop employee shared , “ I like to come out here on my lunch break and watch the world go by ,” capturing a sentiment echoed by many in the community .
