3 . Use Layers of Light To create an atmosphere that looks great in the evening as well as throughout the year , consider incorporating a combination of lighting techniques . Layering is a popular method that involves using different types of lighting to create depth and eye-catching features . Start with ambient lighting , which is used to create a soft , overall illumination that sets the general mood and provides a comfortable level of brightness throughout the outdoor space . This can be achieved with string lights suspended above seating areas , lanterns placed strategically throughout the garden , or wall sconces near outdoor living spaces . Next add task lighting for areas which require focussed light for specific activities , before completing the look with some accent lighting .
