URBAN GREEN SPACE ROOT MANAGEMENT
Traditional root barrier solutions Typically , traditional UK root barriers have been impermeable , limiting natural hydrology , impeding the natural movement of nutrients and potentially promoting localised surface flooding . Overseas we still see barriers using active chemical herbicides used with a questionable effect on local wildlife , agriculture and human health .
Green spaces deliver a wide array of environmental , social and economic benefits . Only in recent times have we truly understood the harmful effect of urbanisation , the loss of greenbelt and the need for SUDs .
Trees play a vital role – absorbing carbon dioxide , releasing oxygen and controlling the rainwater entering watercourses , reducing the likelihood of flooding . The Woodland Trust suggest ‘ trees can reduce outdoor and indoor pollution by an incredible 50 %’. It ’ s also widely accepted that green space can enhance mental health and wellbeing .
The negative impact of urban trees In some cases , however , structures , services or infrastructure can be

Zone of inhibition damaged by tree roots – directly through pressure or indirectly through subsidence .
Structural damage is generally only an outcome where trees ’ uptake is within shrinkable clay soils leading to subsidence . Buildings with comparatively shallow foundations are most vulnerable . Roots may enter drains causing blockages or cavities .
Remedial action is inconvenient , costly and time consuming and in extreme cases prompts legal action . However time and money may be saved through planning or retrospective maintenance . Installing a permeable barrier will allow root systems to exist without being detrimental to neighbouring infrastructure .

CuTex - a tested and trusted root barrier CuTex is a permeable and safe solution for urban green space , tree management and invasive plant strategies . This composite root barrier is a geosynthetic filter / separator that releases natural Cu2 ions into the soil to create a safe chemical barrier , which inhibits root growth through the creation of a ‘ zone of inhibition ’. It ’ s tested to the internationally-recognised standard ( PD CEN / TS 14416:2014 – Determining resistance to roots ) with various species including Japanese Knotweed .
CuTex is useful in many environments :
• For protection of structures – foundations , footings and walling
• Below pavements for the reduction of maintenance
• As a vertical barrier to prevent transboundary root impact
• To contain tree roots retrospectively following subsidence intervention
• Within urban planters , raised beds or public space to prevent roots blocking drains
• For protection of septic tanks and stormwater attenuations systems
• To protect against tree roots affecting services , such as pipework or ducting
