Another majestic choice for bark interest is Lagerstroemia . Often used in the Mediterranean region , Lagerstroemia has gained in popularity in the UK in recent years . The bark is extremely tactile and smooth to the touch with peeling layers revealing patches of colour of cinnamon , orange and grey . The flowers are crinkled and papery in appearance in either hot pink , pink or purple . The autumn foliage is worthy of this tree ’ s inclusion in a project with hues of yellow , gold and red .
Prunus serrula is one of the top choices for ornamental bark multistem trees . When planted where the winter sun illuminates the red-brown shiny bark it is a show stopper of a tree . The leaves turn a dramatic yellow in the autumn .
