Greenwood is committed to being fully peat-free by the end of 2023 , and throughout the course of this year has been carrying out extensive trials to develop a new type of growing media to support its annual production of more than six million plants . It held a peat-free Open Day in June 2022 to share its ambitions and the inside experience of its journey to peat-free with its clients , who support the endeavour and are interested in finding out more .
“ We believe in growing in the most sustainable way possible and believe that stopping the use of peat within the professional horticulture industry is the right thing to do . Transitioning our entire business to becoming peat-free is a major undertaking for Greenwood , but we know its where the future lies , and we must achieve it ” says Managing Director Glenn Devenish .
Ambition is turning to reality , as one in four plants at Greenwood is now potted in peat-free growing media . This approach is covering all areas of the business , as in September 2022 Greenwood launched its new contract growing programme ‘ Watch It Grow ’, which is offered fully peat-free , and its trade sales centre , Greenwood Choice , also has its own dedicated peat-free area , which is set to expand next year . By growing plants in peat-free compost , the environmental benefits can be passed on to designers , landscapers , housebuilders and home owners , ensuring that the whole supply chain ’ s carbon footprint is improved .
Peatlands play a vital role in our fight against climate change , so the time has come to stop digging and safeguard our planet , population and wildlife .
