GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

ABG ’ S BLUE ROOF DRAINAGE SYSTEM

For urban developments with limited space or strict flood risk reduction planning conditions , installing a blue roof system within podium and roof-top areas is an increasingly popular solution . Blue roofs control rainwater at source and maximise the development ’ s available SuDS footprint , avoiding the need to excavate underground storage tanks - that in city centre locations will typically involve difficult access and be expensive to install from a financial and carbon output point of view .
Blue roof drainage systems are also endorsed as the most effective SuDS technique available to local authority planners within ‘ The SuDS Manual ’ guidance , as published by CIRIA . By installing blue roof restrictor chamber and void former systems within podium deck and roof constructions , the volume of storm water that is released into rainwater outlets is controlled and the site ’ s maximum permitted discharge rate ( as designated in the planning conditions ) is not exceeded during storm events with periods of prolonged and intense rainfall .
The blue roof system ’ s attenuation capacity is calculated to accommodate a 1:100 year storm duration event ( as published in Flood Estimation Handbook

or Flood Studies Report data for the site ’ s location ), plus an additional 40 % allowance for the effects of climate change typically detailed .
Blue roofs are suitable for a variety of surface finishes ; including extensive and biodiverse green roofs , paved and decking areas and for final usage applications

such as beneath podium amenity and trafficked areas , MUGAs and M & E plant and PV panel locations . When combined with a green roof surface finish ( extensive or biodiverse ), blue roofs make an important environmental contribution ; including helping to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and reducing the urban heat island effect , filtration of rainwater pollutants , absorbing low frequency sounds and promoting new wildlife ecosystems and biodiversity .

ABG blueroof - Taking rainwater by storm

ABG ’ s blueroof system attenuates and controls rainwater discharge at roof level , forming an integral element within the SuDS design on many modern developments – especially on tight urban sites .
The system ’ s restrictor chambers enable rainfall from storm events to be discharged at a controlled rate , to help meet the site ’ s SuDS planning requirements . Blue roof systems also appear at the top of ‘ the SuDS hierarchy ’ guidance for many planning bodies in the UK .
ABG blueroof can be combined with multiple surface finishes and final area uses at both podium and roof level - including green roofs & biodiverse roofs , amenity terraces , plant areas and trafficked podium areas .
ABG are a leading UK manufacturer , supplier and installer , and can provide a PI-insured design service based upon over 30 years of drainage and installation experience for sustainable green / blue infrastructure projects .
