DECKING There are two primary options when it comes to deck flashing tapes – asphalt-based and butyl tape. Although asphalt-based tape is generally less expensive, it tends to dry out more quickly, curl up and hold water. Butyl tape offers several advantages over asphalt-based tape. It is stickier, performs better in a wider range of temperatures and is more pliable, which allows it to create a tighter seal around screws to prevent water from infiltrating screw holes. Trex® Protect™ is a popular self- adhesive butyl tape that works on horizontal and vertical surfaces and is applied as a “cap” (vs. wrapping), which allows the wood to breathe. The tape lies directly on the boards and features a non-skid surface, making it safer for contractors to walk across during construction. The peel-and-stick application is simple and requires almost no trimming. For added confidence and peace of mind, Trex Protect is the only tape on the market that comes with a 20-year warranty, ensuring the substructure will last as long as the decking it supports. Optimize Space Beneath an Elevated Deck Outdoor space and ample storage are among the most sought-after amenities by today’s homeowners and prospective homebuyers. In both cases, the area beneath an elevated deck can offer an ideal solution. With the addition of an under-deck drainage system, this space can become usable for a multitude of purposes. Using a network of troughs and downspouts, a deck drainage system captures and diverts water away from a deck to protect the substructure from moisture and create dry space underneath. But it’s important to keep in mind that all drainage systems are not created equal. Follow us @ludmagazine www.landud.co.uk 67
