OXFORD STREET TO BE PEDESTRIANISED BY END OF 2018
London mayor Sadiq Khan has unveiled plans to make Oxford Street fully pedestrianised by the end of next year .
The street , popular for its retail oferings , will have traic restrictions and public art showcased from Oxford Circus to Selfridges .
The irst stage of the scheme is expected to take place in December next year and will help prepare the area for the arrival of the Elizabeth Line .
According to the plans , east to west traic will be prohibited but some north to south routes will remain in place .
Bus will be rerouted and cyclists will be expected to dismount in the area . Taxi ranks are also set to be widened .
Khan said : “ Oxford Street is world famous with millions of visitors every year , and in just over a year the iconic part of the street west of Oxford Circus could be transformed into a traic-free pedestrian boulevard . “ Whether you ’ re a local resident , a business , or shop in some of the area ’ s famous stores , our plans will make the area substantially cleaner and safer for everyone , creating one of the inest public spaces in the world .”

NAKED GARDENERS BARE ALL IN PERENNIAL CALENDAR
A group of gardeners have stripped of to star in a naked calendar to raise money for Perennial , the charity helping those in horticulture .
All proceeds from the Perennial Naked Gardeners Calendar 2018 will go towards helping those working in horticulture and their families during times of crisis .
Following the success of the 2015 Naked Gardeners Calendar , a group of volunteers from across the horticulture industry collectively known as ‘ The Grubby Gardeners ’ decided to get together again for their trade charity .
They were photographed by Jonathan Ward of Ginger Horticulture at RHS Garden Wisley .
Anita Bates , director of marketing and development at Perennial , said : “ Thanks so much to the boys who had the idea for the calendar in the irst place and were brave enough to shed their clothes in front of the camera . It is all a bit of fun and makes a great stocking iller or Christmas gift , but it also helps raise money and awareness of the services we ofer to horticulturists who are facing tough times .
“ Christmas is often a diicult time for those struggling with challenges such as illness , accident , debt , bereavement , unemployment and so on , but Perennial is there for everyone working in and retired from all areas of the horticulture industry if ever they need help .”
AWARDS
WARNES MCGARR AND CO SHORTLISTED FOR NORTHERN DESIGN AWARDS
Garden design and landscape consultancy Warnes McGarr & Co has been shortlisted for the Northern Design Awards for its garden at RHS Tatton in July 2017 . The desert-inspired garden was entered into the commercial landscaping design category .
The awards will be announced on Friday 24 November at the Principal Hotel , Manchester at a gala dinner hosted by Wayne Hemingway .
Garden designer Michael John McGarr and landscape designer Robert Warnes designed a garden at the Cheshire lower show , which has already been awarded a gold medal , Best Construction and Best Future Spaces Garden by the RHS judges .
Their ‘ futuristic dystopian ’ design draws upon how climate change will dramatically change our traditional British landscape , and imagines what our gardens would be like with predicted temperature increases .
It depicted the gardens with many species of native plants extinct and resembling the landscape of South California or Mexico , with only droughttolerant plants surviving .
