WINTER 2016 5
The Flower Carpet of Grand-Place is 75m long by 24m wide . Volunteers assemble the entire design in less than four hours .
The Flower Carpet of Grand-Place has a different design every time and it is made out of roughly 700,000 begonias . Each square metre holds about 300 individual plants . More than 100 volunteer gardeners put this giant floral puzzle together in less than four hours . The day before the opening , the spaces between the floral motifs are filled in using rolls of sod . The flowers are closely-packed so that they can ´ t be blown away .
The first flower carpet on the Grand-Place was the work of landscape architect Etienne Stautemas . A graduate of the Horticultural College of Ghent , he began to create flower carpets in the early 1950 ´ s . Simpler and smaller , these ‘ rugs ’ were primarily composed of begonias . After years of testing and calculations , in 1971 the team of Etienne Stautemas and designer Mark Schautteet created the inaugural Grand-Place carpet . The team went on to create more than 180 carpets , across Europe , and as far afield as Buenos Aires and Columbus , Ohio .
