Grenadier timber planters help with social distancing in Leicester
Leicester City Council needed to put social distancing measures in place during the coronavirus crisis .
Timber planters were seen as a useful device to create safe areas for cyclists and pedestrians whilst at the same time restricting vehicular access . Street Design was approached to manufacture and supply their Grenadier timber planters .
The FSC Certified treated softwood planters were manufactured and delivered quickly to allow these changes to be implemented as soon as possible , increasing the spaces for cyclists and pedestrians .
The planters have been used to close off streets , narrow traffic carriageways and create outdoor eating areas .
The closed streets have allowed cafes and bars to extend onto the road , providing safe areas for customers to eat and drink . Planters have been located to reduce the number of carriageways , allowing more space for cyclists and pedestrians .
A large pop-up picnic area has been created in one of the city centre squares , providing seating and tables for people to consume their takeaway food and drink , bought from a range of local businesses .
In addition to helping with social distancing , the planters have increased the number of trees and planting in the city centre .
