Michiel van der Laan , Commander of 1st German Netherlands Corps ( 1GNC ) during the ceremony when they received the mission to be the NRF from NATO Rapid Deployable Corps – Italy , Jan . 9 , 2019 . The 1GNC will be on call during the entire year of 2019 as they are prepared for any call to deploy anywhere for the collective defense of the Alliance . Thomson said during his ceremony speech , “ LTG Michiel van der Laan and the 1st German Netherlands Corps are exactly the right team to assume the NRF Land Component Command mission .” He added , “ Michiel – thank you and your team for taking on this vital mission , as well as hosting today ’ s ceremony . We are fortunate to have your leadership and teamwork at the helm of the NATO Response Force .”
