These days you’re more likely to find yourself rubbing shoulders down the local pub with a solicitor or website designer than a boozeenraged Francis Begbie. Though parts of the port-side suburb remain best avoided, recent years have seen it increasingly gentrified as property prices have shot up closer to the city centre and vibrant streets such as Leith Walk have seen more and more eclectic shops, pubs, bars and restaurants popping up. And there is a huge shopping centre at Ocean Terminal which also boasts bars, restaurants and a multiscreen cinema to cater for more mainstream leisure needs. A two-bedroom flat in Leith will cost between £130,000-£140,000. For those in search of a bit more space for the kids and some garden at a more downto-earth price then this early 1970s George Wimpey estate is worth a once-over. The quiet suburb, served by buses every 15 minutes, is about six-and-ahalf miles from the city centre. It is also well-served by local amenities, including four supermarkets within a two-mile radius and is just ten minutes’ drive from Edinburgh Park business park, with major employers and a retail park all on the doorstep. Your children’s education will be well looked after by some good primary and secondary schools and if you need some green space for the weekends then the 35sq-mile Pentland Hills Regional Park lies just six miles to the south-east. Property here, like the rest of Edinburgh, is not exactly plentiful but a threebedroom semi-detached house will cost between £220,000-£230,000. November 2015 | LandlordVoice | 13
