Landlord jailed over fire safety breaches
A landlord who was making up to
£4,000 a month out of cramming
people into a Coventry house has
been jailed for nine months after
putting his tenants’ lives at risk by
breaching fire regulations.
Luckily, a tenant who woke in the
middle of the night when a fire broke
out helped to avoid a tragedy, a judge
has heard.
The property owner, Gurmeet
Singh, appeared at the crown court
in Leamington after pleading guilty
to eight breaches of fire safety
regulations. Singh also pleaded guilty
to obstructing a fire inspector after
the incident.
Judge Alan Parker said Singh acted
out of greed, making up to £4,000 a
month out of the 16 occupants, and
also ordered him to pay West Midlands
