landlords increasingly wary of taking
on homeless tenants, and according
to the homelessness charity Crisis, the
problem is getting worse.
Homeless people are among the
most vulnerable in society and many,
especially single people, are reliant on
the private rented sector as the only
option to provide a stable home from
which to restart their lives. Yet, less than
20 per cent of landlords are willing to
consider renting to homeless people.
Finding a landlord willing to accept
housing benefit can be tough and when
you combine this with other problems
associated with being homeless, it
becomes even more difficult. Yet with
the right support, including reduced
risk and better security for landlords,
tenancies for homeless people can and
do work.
Much of the work to support homeless
tenants is being conducted by charities
and they can’t succeed alone. Crisis,
alongside the National Landlords
Association and the Residential
Landlords Association, is calling on
Government to support homeless
tenants find homes in the private
rented sector.
