CONTEMPORARY ART REVIEW
By definition video is rhythm and movement , gesture and continuity . In your film you create a time-based work that allow the viewer to abandon himself to his associations . How do you conceive the rhythm of your works ?
I use rhythm and timing to convey tension , emotion , passion , sadness , the passing of time , etc … Rhythm plays a huge role in the story telling and editing process , whether it ’ s narrative , visually driven or a VJ loop .
Take for instance , my short , politically charged piece , 6 Degrees Gemini https :// youtu . be / XJ9e1nET88I an experimental short film about the insatiable drive for wealth and domination of oil ; depicting the avidity of power at any cost , even that of human sacrifice . It uses rhythm to build tension , sexually and thematically , until its ’ inevitable outcome and release .
You also work with Meditation , personal training and life coaching : how does it inform your art practice ?
I am a true , well-balanced dichotomy ! I have always walked my own meditative , spiritual path and am certified as Mindfulness Meditation Teacher . I balance my life between my creative work as a director , producer , media artist and VJ with my passion for helping people through meditation , fitness and lifestyle coaching , as well . I am also a published writer and blogger , having written articles about meditation and well being for Elephant Journal and Rebelle Society .
My coaching practice is called , Fit Conscious Happy … I ’ ve found that fitness combined with meditation manages our stress level , boosts our immune systems and keeps us happy with all the brain ’ s ‘ feel good ’ chemicals , endorphins that are released during exercise and / or meditation . Happiness doesn ’ t just happen ! We create it every day with our attitude , thoughts and emotions .
I also find exercise and meditation to be a huge source of inspiration ! Many of my best ideas come during my work outs or meditation when the rush of endorphins and dopamine in my system serves as a muse . Also meditation is a form of listening and when we are silent we hear the voice inside , the voice of the soul . This is where ideas and images come from , tapping into the moment .. the NOW .
Over these years your work has been screened across the United States and abroad : it has been featured in several location , including The Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee , the 11th Annual Experimental Film Festival in Sydney and the prestigious Chicago Art Institute . One of the hallmarks of your art is the capability to create direct involvement with the viewers , who are urged to evolve from a condition of mere spectatorship . So before leaving this conversation we would like to pose a question about the nature of the relationship of your art with your audience . Do you consider the issue of audience reception as being a crucial component of your decision-making process , in terms of what type of language is used in a particular context ?
Of course keeping the audience in mind , when making a film , is something that needs to be considered
