Yellowstone National Park
Established in 1872, Yellowstone National Park is
America’s first national
park. Located in Wyoming,
Montana and Idaho, it is
home to a large variety of
wildlife including grizzly
bears, wolves, bison, and
elk. Preserved within Yellowstone National Park are
Old Faithful and a collection of the world’s most extraordinary geysers and hot
springs, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
Experience Old Faithful,
the most popular geyser in
the world, and hundreds
of other geysers and hot
springs. Look for bears and
wolves, elk and buffalo in
the Lamar and Hayden Valleys. Hiking, camping, fishing, enjoying exhibits and
films, and attending Rangerled programs are among the
many ways to experience
Yellowstone.
Yellowstone is open every day of the year. Most
entrances (except the North
and North East entrances)
close in November while
roads are being prepared for
the winter season and again
in the late March and early
April months to clear the
roads for the summer season.
Only two park roads are
plowed in the winter and remain open for wheeled-vehicle use: the road between the
North Entrance at Gardiner,
Montana, to the Northeast
Entrance at Silver Gate and
Cooke City, Mont. and from
Mammoth Hot Springs to
the parking area at the Upper
Terraces (approximatedly
1/2 mi. of road)
In the spring, before park
roads open to motorized vehicles, some roads are open
to non-motorized recreational vehicles such as bicycles,
roller skis, and roller blades.
Park areas, entrances and
roads open on different
dates. The summer season
runs from approximately
mid-April to the beginning
of November. Yellowstone’s
climate is one of cold winters and moderate summers.
Most of the park is above
7,500 feet and the weather is
unpredictable. Be prepared
for changing temperatures,
storms and emergencies.
