Lander is the jumping off point
to vast areas of the Shoshone
National Forest/Wind River
Mountains and the awesome Red
Desert recreational playgrounds.

The Popo Agie River runs
right through the heart of the city
and a pathway system for hikers,
your vehicle, one of the best and
easiest ways is to travel the Loop
Road. Follow the signs to Sinks
Canyon State Park via state highway
131 from 5th and Main Streets in
downtown Lander. The canyon is
so named because the Popo Agie
River sinks into a cavern on the
south wall of the canyon, only to
reappear in a trout filled pool a
quarter-mile downstream on the
north side of the canyon.
Continuing the drive through
Sinks Canyon brings
you into the Shoshone
National Forest and onto
the Loop Road (just past
Bruce’s Parking area).
