One major departure the Lamplighters Mesivta has taken from traditional yeshivah norms in our community is the incorporation of personal interests and passions within the seder of learning. From the student’s perspective, this is one of the most successful aspects of our design. This does, however, call into question the nature and purpose of “yeshivah” and what it is meant to accomplish. For many of our students, Lamplighters is the first place they have found a community of other students and adults who create space for seeking one’s individual mission—through exploring heart, will, mind and talents. In our perspective, this is essential Chassidic education.
