The City of Lakeville experienced an active year of development in 2025, with an annual building permit valuation totaling $ 381 million.
Lakeville’ s population is 79,270 according to the Metropolitan Council. This equates to a 14.1 % population increase since 2010. Lakeville is the largest city in Dakota County and the ninth largest in the state of Minnesota.
There were numerous ribbon cuttings to celebrate new businesses in 2025, including commercial and retail businesses, restaurants, medical office developments, as well as several large industrial park projects.
Lakeville issued 229 single-family permits in 2025 and ranked # 1 in residential permit numbers in the Twin Cities. In addition, the City is ranked # 2 in permitted units in the Twin Cities behind Rosemount. The number of permits issued is 319 townhome units and 73 multi-family units. The variety of housing types being developed in Lakeville is consistent with the Envision Lakeville goal of providing housing choices for“ people of all ages and stages of life.”
The private sector invested $ 111.3 million into commercial and industrial park development in Lakeville in 2025 and the largest permitted project was Dakota Electric Association’ s Energy Center, valued at $ 47.8 million.
Lakeville is home to Airlake Airport, a public use airport owned by the Metropolitan Airports Commission. It serves recreational fliers but is also ideally suited for business aviation. The airport currently has a 4,099- foot runway and full-length parallel taxiway. Several improvements are ongoing at Airlake Airport to better meet the needs of recreational and business aircraft, including adding additional hangar space and plans expansion of the primary runway to 4,850 feet. Aloft Aviation, the fixed base operator at Airlake Airport, is the official flight training center. The airport saw 42,611 landings and takeoffs, with 31 direct jobs, 104 total jobs and a total economic output of $ 13.2 million.
