By disrupting stratification through lake aeration , a healthier habitat can be created for fish and other aquatic life .
What do the early results look like ?
Hood ’ s July samples from Lake Anita Louise were the 1st since the start of the aerators . Early resultsEarly results indicate an overall positive effect on the lake microbiota and duckweed no longer completely covered the surface . All depths had relatively low levels of chlorophyll reflectance
( indicating lower algae and cyanobacteria populations ) and dissolved oxygen levels of 4mg / L were measured throughout all depths indicating aerobic conditions throughout . Reduced algae ( and cyanobacteria ) were observed in microscopy and diatoms predominated at depth instead of the cyanobacteria usually observed . Future monitoring will further assess aeration system effect on lake water quality .
How does LLA minimize some of the trade-offs of the aeration system ?
LLA utilized a bubbler aeration system instead of a fountain type of system to preserve the natural character of the lake . Also , in order to minimize energy use and cut down on noise , the system is set into idle mode during the night .
