areas , 97 % of Americans have access to high-speed fixed service . In rural areas , that number falls to 65 %. And on Tribal lands , barely 60 % have access . All told , nearly 30 million Americans cannot reap the benefits of the digital age .
The FCC identified census tracts across the country that were unserved by broadband internet providers . Once the tracts were established the organization created a reverse auction to determine what providers were going to service which areas .
In December of 2020 the FCC announced 13 winning bidders for Alabama with $ 330 million allocated for support over 10 years .
Point Broadband and Bay Springs Telephone Company ( TEC ) were awarded bids in Randolph County while Point Broadband and Centurylink were awarded bids in Clay County . Other winning bidders in the surrounding area included Windstream in Chambers County and Space Exploration Technologies Corp . in Cleburne County along with Point Broadband .
