Boat Safely This Winter With These Tips

The lake is much calmer this time of the year , the scenery is still amazing and the fish are still biting . However , enjoying the lake in the winter takes a little more planning than summer time . There are many measures needed to ensure your day on the lake is safe and enjoyable .
The use of life jackets is more important during winter boating than in warm weather . The water is cold this time of the year with an average water temperature around 50 ° F . If a person falls into cold water - their body ' s initial reaction is a ' gasp reflex ' which can include hyperventilation and muscle spasms . This initial reaction , which can lasts up to three minutes , causes changes in heart rate and blood pressure . Next , there is a loss of strength and sensation in hands , which prevents you from swimming . If you are not able to get out of the water and get warm , hypothermia will begin to set in .
Know the signs of hypothermia : shivering , confusion , fatigue / drowsiness , slurred speech and impaired mobility and dexterity .
Your body ’ s temperature will continue to drop until it reaches the same temperature as the water …. As the body ' s core temperature falls , a person will eventually lapse into unconsciousness .… and possibly death . As you can see , it is extremely important to wear your life jacket ! Tip : don ’ t wear your life jacket under your jacket - wear it on top !
What to do if you do fall in and cannot get out ? Calm yourself down , slow your breathing and keep your head out of the water . If you are alone , cross your arms tightly against the chest and bring your knees up close to the chest . If there are several of you , huddle together to keep warm . Once you are out of the water , change into dry clothes and slowly get warm . Drink warm liquids and wrap up in a blanket .
In addition to your normal safety gear , such as tow lines , flares , an air horn and a fire extinguisher , carrying a blanket and a change of clothes is essential .
Dress in layers for winter boating . Wearing breathable and waterproof synthetic clothing is better than cotton . Sweatshirts and jeans will not keep you warm and dry .
Your layers should include gloves and a hat or toboggan . Staying dry is extremely important - hypothermia can set in with cold air too . According to Safe Boating Campaign , dress for the water temperature , not the air temperature .
Have a few snacks on board too ! Your body uses more energy in the cold so it needs more fuel - snacks ! Also , hot drinks will warm you up while on the lake . Staying hydrated is important . And always avoid alcohol when boating !
Boating in the winter needs to be at a slower pace , because the water level is at winter pool ( 785 ft ) and hazards , which are usually covered during the summer , are now exposed . Keep your batteries fully charged in your boat ( and phone !), and let your family and friends know your plan .
