Without hesitation or complaint, they are taking every pre- caution asked of them and bravely shouldering the weight of responsibility for our residents. They wear a mask from the moment they walk in the building until leav- ing (often 12+ hours later), their hands are raw and cracked from constant washing and sanitizing, they take their own and every residents’ temperature multiple times a day, they have given up leaving for breaks and do their best to avoid going any- where else before or after work. They screen everyone coming in the building for any reason and sanitize every piece of mail or box of supplies before it goes down the hall. Staff and supervisors alike are tired from taking on extra duties and working long hours but their efforts are relentless. It is not the same as fighting a war for our country (as many of our residents did) but it is a battle for the wellbeing of those who fought for and carried our nation through other challenges. It is the LSHCF team’s goal to keep the “invisible enemy” out but we are also prepared to stand and fight should it find a way in. The women and men of LSHCF are doing all this and more to proudly serve and protect the residents of LSHCF. Heroes do wear masks these days. But those wearing masks and acting as the thin line between our residents and COVID-19 are not the only heroes. I am proud to say the residents are once again demonstrating why many of them are part of the “greatest generation.” Yes, being isolated from their families and visitors, being screened daily (sometimes more) and wearing their own masks at times has been difficult; but they have taken it in stride. Their resiliency and joy for life regardless of the news, the virus, the lack of visitors, social distancing, cancelled group activities and their own health challenges is in- spiring! They recognize us in our masks like we have been wearing them all along and seem to know when we are smiling or not (and are quick to inquire when we aren’t). The residents’ courage energizes us to continue to fight every day. We may wear the masks but the residents are our heroes. e-mail: cheryl.ahlers@ citizensmemorial.com ADM I NIS TRAT IO N: CHR IS MC BRAT NEY, ADM I NIS TRATOR ANA PE NNER , DIR ECTOR O F NURSI NG CATR ENA MART I N, BUS INESS O FF IC E D EBRA S TOCKTO N, SOC IAL S ERV IC ES CARR IE ME EKS, MDS COORDI NA TOR SUZA NNE COX, E NV IRO NME NTAL SER VIC ES CH ELS IE HUDSO N, NUTR IT IO NAL SER VIC ES CH ERYL AHLERS , AC TI VI TY D IREC TOR RYA N K EI TH , MA I NT ENA NC E “ LIKE” US ON FACEBOOK!!!
