Walking
Lake Mountain Alpine Resort has a fantastic variety of walking trails, ranging from
easy and wheel chair friendly to challenging hikes.
Please note: Walking trails #1, #2 & #3 are open year-round.
The ski trail network and walking trails #4 & #5 are only open for walking during the
Green Season (October - May).
Summit Walk - 5km return 1
The track leaves from the south side of
Gerraty’s Car Park and soon becomes a
gentle incline to the summit. Although
predominately through Snow Gum
woodland, Alpine Ash and Mountain
Hickory Wattle are also abundant. Since
the 2009 fires the initial strong recovery
has now become a battle for survival as
the seedlings turn to trees and compete
for nutrients and light. A short detour in
and out to the Marysville Lookout offers
some great views on a clear day.
Leadbeaters Walk
600m return 2
This walk leaves from the SE corner
of Gerraty’s Car Park. It is a beautiful
walk through regenerating Alpine
Ash forest, ideal for young children.
During the White Season it offers
many opportunities for snow play
and is particularly beautiful after fresh
snowfalls. Interpretative signs along
the walk highlight the impact of both
the 1939 and 2009 fires and relics from
the timber logging era.
From the Summit take the track to Alps
Lookout. It’s a pleasant stroll through
Snow Gum woodland and granite
outcrops to a wonderful view of the
Victorian Alps on a clear day and also
a view of Jubilee Ridge where a small
section of the resort escaped the fire.
This ridge is the location of some of the
few Leadbeaters Possums known to
have survived the fires.
Next is Sherlock Lookout, a 150m
deviation from the loop, with a picnic
table and views towards Melbourne.
Turn around here to retrace your steps
to Taggerty Valley Lookout, another
rocky outcrop with views of Marysville
and the Melbourne CBD on a clear day.
From here the track meanders across
the plateau to the Summit, and your
original track to return to the Car Park.
Bjarne Dahl Memorial Walk -
500m return 3
A wheel chair accessible boardwalk
at Snowy Hill Car Park, where the first
skiers on Lake Mountain tried their
skills in the 1920’s. Signage outlines
the characteristics of Snow Gums and
Alpine Ash, the two eucalypts which
dominate this plateau, as well as the
skiing history of the area and the
impacts of fire on these forests.
