Sailing is a lifelong sport the entire family can enjoy . When a young person gains control of their own vessel in the waters of Lake Michigan , they gain an exciting confidence that will only grow . All of our instructors are U . S . Sailing certified and trained in safety and instruction . OPTIMIST RACE TEAM ( 8-14Y ) Grab your dry suits ( required ) and join us for the Spring Optimist Race Team . Sailors should have racing experience before joining our spring team . This season is not right for all Green Fleet sailors , so please contact the sailing director if this will be your first spring team with LFS . Sailors can expect to freshen up their boat speed and racing skills to get ready for a big summer of competition .

HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON TEAM ( GRADES 9-12 ) The Championship Season Team is for seasoned high school sailors who have dry suits and will attend mandatory 4 days per week practice . The focus will be Boat Handling , Boat Speed , and Team Racing . The main goal of the Championship Season Team is to qualify for High School Nationals for both Fleet & Team Racing . Rosters for regattas will be determined by performance at practice and adherence to the mandatory practice schedule . Top national coaches will be brought in to work with the team in preparation for qualifiers . The team will spend over 40 days on the water within the first two months of the season . HIGH SCHOOL PIPELINE RACE TEAM ( GRADES 8-12 ) The Pipeline Race Team is for newer high school sailors and those who cannot commit the time to the Championship Season Team . The pipeline team however is not for brand new sailors , Lake Michigan in the spring time is not a time for people to learn how to sail . Racing skills will be honed and this team will prepare sailors well for the summer of racing ahead . The main focus will be building skills in assigned pairs , and learning to get around the racecourse with more confidence in starting , tactics , and strategy .
