THE ROAD TO SAFETY

More DUI checkpoints , public outreach efforts and increased enforcement of the hands-free cellphone law are just some of the ways that Laguna Beach Police Department plans to reduce illegal and reckless driving by motorists in coming months . These new measures are thanks to a $ 110,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration . “ Impairment , speeding and other dangerous driving behaviors put … the community at risk on the road ,” Laguna police Lt . Cornelius Ashton said in a news release . “ This funding affords the Laguna Beach Police Department the ability to allocate resources towards community education and increased traffic enforcement measures . Ultimately , the goal is to reduce serious injury and fatal crashes on our roads .” In addition to the strategies mentioned above , the department will also be giving presentations about traffic safety issues , increasing enforcement efforts to keep bicyclists and pedestrians safe as well as boosting officer training and recertification related to the field sobriety test , impaired driving enforcement and drug recognition to help prevent drivers from making poor decisions on the road .
