T he Callaway Memorial Tower was constructed in 1929, honor- ing Fuller E. Callaway, and near- ly 100 years later it’s become a land- mark to anyone from Troup County. The tower was built in Fuller’s honor, a year and a half after he died on Feb. 12, 1928. The tower was dedicated on Oct. 15, 1929 and remains today on Fourth Avenue in Southwest LaGrange. “I definitely think for people who grew up here and spent any amount of time here that [the tower] would be a reminder of LaGrange,” said Tripp Penn, president of the Callaway Foun- dation. The tower and surrounding area have become a place for families to picnic and spend some free time together. There’s often barbecues at the tower, and the area has become a popular spot for photographers to take portrait shots. The Callaway Foundation owns the property, but it allows community use of the area. “It’s a situation where it’s just open use,” Penn said. “So, if you decide to host a picnic out there, that’s great.
