advice,” he said. “They will tell you that they don’t call
them starving artists for nothing and that (Vincent) Van
Goh never sold a painting and you have to die to be-
come famous.”
When he began to create abstract art, he started to
sell paintings, which led to him to become more serious
about the art.
Once he started to make money selling his work,
he knew he needed a way to promote his work. So, he
watched YouTube videos to learn how to create a web-
site to showcase his work and learned about online
marketing.
“I am very proud that I learned how to do that,” he
said.
Barriento knew at that point that he needed to leave
the restaurant because his art was starting to generate
income. The time constraints of working in the food
service industry and the demands of needing to create
art forced him to make a choice. He chose art.
However, he quickly learned he needed more disci-
pline to be a full-time artist.
“To become a full-time artist, I had the vision and I
had the passion, but I didn’t have the discipline,” Barri-
ento said.
