UNESCO adds Tunisia ’ s Djerba to World Heritage List
September 18 , 2023 , marks a historic moment for Djerba , North Africa ’ s largest island , which has officially earned its place on UNESCO ’ s prestigious World Heritage List . The listing , approved at a meeting of UNESCO ’ s Member States in Riyadh , recognizes 7 distinct areas of the island and 24 monuments that embody the rich cultural and environmental heritage of this Mediterranean pearl .

Covering an area of 514 km ², Djerba represents a genuine treasure trove of diversity . Its dazzling white villages , dotted with « houchs » ( traditional houses built around an inner courtyard with ingenious rainwater collection systems ), stand alongside Carthaginian and Roman remains , seaside desert areas , lush palm groves , and fields of olive trees as far as the eye can see . Djerba ’ s landscapes were even used as a backdrop for certain scenes on the planet Tatooine in the famous Star Wars saga .

Yet Djerba , much more than a natural wonder , is also a symbol of religious coexistence . The island is home to churches , synagogues - including the Ghriba , the oldest in Africa - and fortified Ibadite mosques , a distinct branch of Islam , some of which are buried underground . This religious diversity reflects Djerba ’ s complex history and rich culture .
