LAC STE. ANNE COUNTY
PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT
Well managed growth across the region.
The County has roles and
responsibilities under the
Municipal Government Act
to manage the use of land to
achieve orderly, economical
and beneficial development,
and to maintain and improve
the quality of the physical
environment. The overarching
objective is to find the right
balance between land
preservation and responsible
and sustainable economic
development.
Make Sure Your Plans are Approved
D
evelopment Permits approve the use of a site, as well as the size and location
of any buildings or structures. Permit approvals must be obtained for new
construction, renovations, businesses and changes of use to existing buildings. A
Development Permit is written approval from the County that your plans are in accordance
with the Land Use Bylaw. You are required to have a valid permit before applying for a
Building Permit to construct the building or structure, or to apply for a business license.
Permit Applications
Development Permit applications should be submitted in person, so staff can screen it and
ensure that it’s complete. Applications can be made by an agent or consultant on behalf of
a landowner. For major and/or complex development proposals, an applicant may request
a pre-application meeting before submitting their formal application.
Development Permits & Building Permits are Different
A Development Permit is not the same as a Building Permit. A Development Permit
allows for a specific type of development on a specific parcel of land in the community to
proceed, consistent with the zoning and development bylaws of the County.
A Building Permit allows for construction of building(s) or structure(s) to proceed on
condition of compliance with the Alberta Building Code which addresses building and
fire safety. A Building Permit is required for the construction, alteration, repair, relocation,
demolition, or change of use of a building. Farm accessory buildings, and non-hazardous
accessory buildings under 100 square feet (10m2), are exempt.
