Around the world , health laboratories from multiple sectors are engaged in the ongoing detection of pathogens , harmful chemicals and residues affecting human , animal and environmental health . To successfully address the need for a
One Health approach to disease prevention and control in humans , animals and the environment , these laboratories will depend on effective and collaborative actions and leadership . However , laboratory-specific leadership development opportunities and multisectoral collaborations on a global scale have been lacking .
The Global Laboratory Leadership Programme ( GLLP ), developed by a partnership of six leading international organizations , was designed to address these gaps . The partners recently released the GLLP Learning Package — a compilation of tools , information and resources used to plan , develop , implement and evaluate a laboratory leadership program that is designed to be implemented in any region , country or educational institution in the world .
Under oversight of the GLLP development partners , the GLLP curriculum is currently in various stages of implementation within 17 countries ( Armenia , Burkina Faso , Chad , Ecuador , Guinea , Kazakhstan , Liberia , Mali , Moldova , Mozambique , Oman , Pakistan , Paraguay , Sierra Leone , Tanzania , Thailand and Ukraine ). Six of these countries have engaged participants and are actively implementing learning activities and the remaining countries are still in the planning and development stages . Participants in the six implementing programs include 84 laboratory professionals with 67 % of the participants from the human health sector , 21 % from the animal health sector , 8 % from the food , water and / or environmental sector and 4 % from research laboratories . APHL is in the early stages of GLLP implementation in Mozambique , Sierra Leone , Tanzania and Ukraine , and is currently planning

and adapting the program to meet each country ’ s needs .
Information obtained from early implementation of the program will allow for course materials and the program model to be refined to ensure an approach to laboratory leadership , management and system building that is truly One Health in focus . In addition , lessons learned from the early programs will inform the further development of a fully multi-sectoral program model that will support laboratories working within the human , animal and environmental sectors . The GLLP materials , hosted on the
WHO Health Security Learning Platform , contain 200 contact hours of content and are designed to support flexible programming that can be designed to meet country-specific workforce needs . Access to the full set of course materials is currently restricted , as the partners continue to refine the Learning Package based on feedback . Once the evaluation phase is completed , the course materials will be released for public use . n
The Global Laboratory Leadership Programme supports all competencies included in the Laboratory Leadership Competency Framework .
