Mental illness is a medical condition and biological brain disorder that can disturb the thinking , feelings , mood , ability to relate to others and the daily functioning of a person , which often results in decreased ability to to cope with the ordinary demands of life .
These disorders can affect people of any age or race , in all walks of life . Mental illnesses can include Major Depression , Bipolar Disorder , Schizophrenia and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder , among others . These disorders may not only affect persons with the disease , but their relatives and society in general . People with mental illness can experience many symptoms . When they affect your quality of life , please ask for help . Early intervention produces the best results .
What services can you use ? NAMI Brown County is a nonprofit organization that provides free support groups for patients , families and friends of those who have experienced the challenges of living with mental illness . These groups meet at different times throughout the week and are places of acceptance and trust . Family-to-Family , Companion-to-Companion , and Hand-to-Hand education programs teach consumers and loved ones about the biological basis for brain disorders , treatments , and what kind of support services and tools that are available for them to use . NAMI of Brown County sponsors The Gathering Place , a recovery center for people with mental illness . The Gathering Place is operated by patients and offers a strong network of support , friendship and understanding .
The Brown County Crisis Center has 24 hours of free support and crisis intervention services available by phone or face-to-face . They can help you direct you to the services that are available in the community . They can also help with evaluation and short-term follow-up treatment . The number of 24 - hour crisis is 920-436-8888 . If you are concerned that a friend or loved one is contemplating suicide or self-harm , call your local police and ask them to verify the welfare of that person .
Request a Mental Health Officer If you communicate with the Green Bay Police , you can ask to speak with a Mental Health Officer or an officer of the CCIT ( Community Crisis Intervention Team ). CCIT officers respond to all types of emergency calls , so we can not guarantee that one will always be available , but it never hurts to ask . There are many other community resources available depending on your individual needs . Call if you have any questions or are seeking guidance .
