A neuroendocrine carcinoid tumor often begins
in the stomach, appendix, small intestine, colon,
rectum, or lungs.
Although little is known about what causes these
tumors, there is some evidence that smoking may
contribute to it.
People with neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis,
a history of atrophic gastritis or any of the
following genetic syndromes should talk about
their risk with their doctor.
• Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia (MEN) type I
• Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
• Von Hippel-Lindau Syndrome
