L
ast month on April 4th
2014 the first commercial
flight landed at the Scarlett
Martinez International airport in
Rio Hato, Panama. Arriving from
Toronto, the Sunwing Charter
flight brought media attention
from all over the country.
Playacommunity arrived on the
scene after the flight had
released its passengers, the
speeches were done and the
camera crews were packing up.
We got a chance to speak
casually with a manager of the
handling company running the
airport. He told us that Sunwing
flights were expected to land
regularly within a few weeks.
This however, may not be the
case,
according
to
a
representative from Sunwing
Airlines.
The Sunwing rep told us, over
the phone, that the Sarlett
Martinez flight was a “special
occasion.” It was an opportunity
for Sunwing to inspect the
facilities before entering into a
contract with the new airport. It
was also part of the opening
ceremony.
According to Sunwing, the flight
initially intended fly into Tocumen
PTY airport. However, since all
passengers were part of an
all-inclusive package at the RUI
hotel in Playa Blanca, Sunwing
made the choice to redirect this
one flight.
Sunwing stated that they are
optimistic that flights into Rio
Hato will be a reality for next high
season, but for now customers
cannot book flights into Scarlett
Martinez. Sunwing will not
renegotiate its contract with
Tocumen until October 2014, nor
will Air Transat.
So if your friends or family
members are searching the web
for charter-flights in to the
Scarlett Martinez airport, you will
need to wait a bit longer.
Currently there are none.

Tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar
informalmente con un gerente de la
compañía que administra el aeropuerto.
Él nos comentó que esperaban que los
vuelos de Sunwing aterrizaran con
regularidad dentro de unas semanas.
Sin embargo, puede que esto no
ocurra, de acuerdo con un representante de Sunwing Airlines.
El representante de Sunwing nos
comentó por teléfono que el vuelo al

“ocasión especial”. Fue la oportunidad
para Sunwing de inspeccionar las
