The medical career is one of the most desired in the country. It enjoys great social prestige and doctors play an important role in our environment. At the same time, there is a series of ideas about the career that are not always correct. In this article we analyze the situation of Medicine in the country and we try to give you a realistic and concrete vision of this discipline. On Wednesday we give you a second installment of this topic, with an interview with a doctor who will tell us all about the work situation in Costa Rica and the dedication that the race demands.

What is medicine?

Medicine is a discipline in which, from a broad knowledge of the functioning of the human body, professionals are prepared to guide and preserve the health of individuals, preventing diseases and restoring their best condition. Medicine combines a rigorous scientific knowledge with a humanistic education that guarantees a respectful, responsible and reliable treatment towards patients.

Medicine is characterized by having a wide range of specialties: sports medicine, occupational medicine, infectology, cardiology, allergology, neurology, ophthalmology, pediatrics, psychiatry, urology, gynecology, among many other specialties. Usually, the doctor obtains a basic training that is then complemented with one of these specialties.

The goal of the Medicine career is to preserve as much as possible the life of a person using all their knowledge in the diagnosis, care and monitoring of a disease and its elimination or reduction. The doctor makes diagnoses, prognoses and treatments based on scientific knowledge of diseases to ensure that individuals and communities are in optimal body condition. The doctor is also involved in health prevention and maintenance campaigns at the community or national level.

What characteristics should the medical professional have?

A professional in Medicine should have the following characteristics:

Interest for the health of the people.

Disposition to face the human body in different conditions of illness or trauma.

Provision for teamwork.

Sense of responsibility.

Capacity for interpretation, analysis and synthesis.

Psychomotor skills, especially acuity in the fine motor and vision.
