First Conference
Latina Child
Care Conference
More than 30 child care providers attended the ?rst annual Latino Child Care
Conference on April 4, 2009, at Ridgewater College, Hutchinson campus. The goal
of the conference was to reach the area’s
Latino licensed and non-licensed child
care providers on their important role in
the early care and education ?eld. In addition, providers were presented ways to
enhance the physical, social-emotional,
cognitive, and language skills of the children they provide care for.
The event was deemed a success, according to coordinators Tari Niemeyer of Ridgewater College and Anel Flores and Becky
Knudson, Heartland Community Action
Agency. They credited their partners: Midwest Child Care Resource and Referral, TriValley Migrant Head Start, McLeod County
Thrive Initiative, and the Willmar/Litch?eld
Early Childhood Initiatives.
The keynote presenter was Angèle
Passe, licensed early childhood teacher
and parent educator in early childhood
and family education. Passe also has administrative experience ranging from
co-director of a small parent run cooperative nursery school to executive director
of Student Family and Community Partnerships in Minneapolis Public Schools.
With Kate Horst, she is co-author of
SEEDS of School Readiness and Early Literary Training, which she also teaches for
Eager-to-Learn. Her session was titled,
“¡Mi Maestra Es Fabulosa, Fantástica y
Notable!” In this workshop, participants
explored the following topics:
- What is early literacy?
- What do children need to learn before they enter kindergarten?
- How do children learn to talk, read
and write while playing and having fun?
- How do parents and teachers teach
young children?
Participants also attended two breakout
sessions, Fun and Learning at Circle Time
and Moving to Grow and Learn. Victoria
Campoverde, who is the lead teacher and
co-program director at Joyce Bilingual
Preschool, taught the Fun and Learning at
Circle Time session. Participants explored
ways to encourage children’s active participation and to foster language and creativity. They sang, danced, and co-created
a variety of songs and stories to use with
children they care for. Moving to Grow
and Learn was taught by Nancy Mellesmoen, who is the center director for TriValley Migrant Head Start in Glencoe
and ESL teacher, and Rosantina Aguilar
who is a teacher at Tri-Valley Migrant
Head Start. Participants learned about
childhood obesity and the importance of
movement and motion.
Feedback from the conference was so
positive that the coordinators are looking
ahead to provide additional conference
possibilities.
Community resources represented at
the ?rst annual conference were: Midwest Child Care Resource and Referral,
Heartland Community Action Agency,
McLeod County Thrive Initiative, TriValley Migrant Head Start, Willmar &
