Today, a jet flight of a few hours
will land you in Italy. In 1937, a
transatlantic crossing, perhaps on the
SS Rex or the SS Conte di Savoia,
was the only option. As a boy in
1937, my dad, mother, sister and I
spent six or seven days aboard the
ocean liner, Conte di Savoia, finally
arriving in Naples. This beautifully
decorated luxury liner was the
sister-ship of the SS Rex that held the
speed record for crossing the Atlantic.
I remember how new and large
our ship was (over 48,000 tons
and 814 feet long). At capacity, it
carried
nearly
3,000
people,
including a crew of 650. I also
remember that I didn’t get seasick
because the “Count of Savoia” had
gyroscopes designed to promote
smooth crossings. The total weight
of the stabilizer device was 750 tons.
My sister, Madeline, reminded me
of how she and I fell out of our bunks
one night when the ship, for whatever
reason, made a sharp turn. I also
remember hurting my finger during
play time while “sword fighting” and
went to the dispensary for treatment.
The Conte di Savoia had a greatlooking open air swimming pool, but
Madeline and I were not allowed near

dad had to toss coins in the air so
they would scatter after the change.
Our beautiful luxury liner was a

War II and scuttled in the Bay of
Naples. It was set on fire and sunk
by retreating German forces in 1943.

it because we didn’t
know how to swim.
We used to sit on the
deck’s lounging chairs
and play shuffleboard.
We also spent time
running through the
ship’s arcade and shops.
I guess the most
striking feature of the
ship was the massive
room for dining and
dancing. It was designed,
apparently, after a palace
in Rome and named
the

Room.
There
were

columns, cornices and sculptures
all over the place. On the ceiling
was a huge painting reproduction
of a famous Italian battle. We
were told Italians love paintings.
We were treated to a tour of the
gigantic downstairs engine room.
They didn’t tell us that a few years
earlier, on the maiden voyage, the ship
had an outlet valve problem that blew
out a large hole below the water line.
Crew members plugged the leak and
saved a ship disaster. We also looked
at my dad’s green Buick in the storage
area. We drove all over central Italy
