Play ball! The major league
baseball season is underway and,
over the years, America’s favorite
summer past time has featured many
Italians. Ed Abbaticchio was the first
to play in the big leagues, with the
Philadelphia Phillies in 1897 and
Pittsburgh in the 1909 World Series.
As a big baseball fan, I have
had the opportunity to see some
of the best that have ever played. I
remember getting upper deck, right
field, free tickets if you had perfect
attendance at school. You could
also buy a box seat for $1.65 and a
reserve seat for $1.35. My favorite
player is #5, the Yankee Clipper
from New York. Joe DiMaggio could
not only hit, he caught everything
belted toward center field. He
had speed and a gallopping stride.
DiMag, whose father was a
fisherman in San Francisco, had hits
in 56 consecutive games, a record
that still stands. After his streak was
stopped by third baseman, Kenny
Keltner, who made two back-handed
stops at the old stadium in Cleveland,
he added 17 more straight hits.
With the DiMaggio’s, it was “all in
the family.” Joe’s brother, Dominic,
was a superstar with Boston, and his

Several Italians have managed
teams as well: Terry Francona of
the Tribe, Tony LaRussa, Tommy
Lasorda, Joe Torre, Bobby Valentine
and Billy Martin. And, Italian Nick
Mileti, a John Adams High alum,
owned the Indians from 1972-75.
Italians have always been a
big part of the major leagues. A
side
note:
the
“Bambino,”
Babe Ruth, was not an Italian!

Pittsburgh. There was
a story that DiMaggio’s
brother,
Paul,
was
better than all of them,
but preferred to stay
with papa and fish.
I’ve
seen
some
outstanding
Italians
play the game. From the
Yanks: Frankie Crosetti,
Yogi Berra, Phil “Scooter”
Rizzuto, Jason Giambi
and Vic Raschi. The
Boston Red Sox had Frank
Malzone, Tony Conigliaro,
Rico
Petrocelli,
and D o m
DiMaggio. I saw Ken Aspromonte,
Joe Altobelli, Don Mossi, Matt
LaPorta, Johnny Beradino, Tom
Candiotti, Vinnie Paestano, Rick
Cerone, Johnny Romano, Tito
Francona and of course, Rocky
Colavito, all of the Indians. Our
present-day Indian, Nick Swisher,
is Italian on his mother’s side.
But my all-time favorite Indian
was not Italian, #7, Hal Trosky.
Other notable Italian players
I’ve enjoyed watching include Ralph
Branca, Roy Campanella, Sal (the
barber) Maglie, Sam Dente, Tony

A Message from the Publisher
April is upon us, and spring is
beginning to show its face. It’s time to
think green, time for Easter lilies, and
time for the arrival of the traditional
Easter Bunny. Most importantly,
Easter is a time to reflect on our
sacrifices, and focus on living more
like the example Christ set for us.
This month, we have some
great articles all dedicated to
Easter. We also have stories that
feature Italian basketball coaches
and upcoming books out for
you to read. Our featured writer
eri,
ela Spitalisher from the Cleveland Museum of
Ang
Art also shares his reflections
Publi
on a current piece in the Museum.
Each month, the La Gazzetta
team strives to bring you the latest
in news and content from here AND
from Italy. We are always looking
for writers to help spread the news.
If you are interested in writing for
us, please contact me. You can write
for every issue, or just one! To learn
