at Alexander Hamilton Junior High
and John Adams schools, but in the
homestead it was a two party system.
When I was looking for
sweets and treats, my choices were
either Podersky’s next to Guerra’s
drugstore and across from St.
Cecilia’s, my parish, on E. 151st,
Weiderhorn’s, next
to
Johnny
Russo’s drugstore and sit-down soda
fountain on E. 154th or LaPuma’s,
a few feet west of the church.
When my taste buds yearned
for coconut bars, Weiderhorn’s and
Podersky’s filled the bill. I remember
paying 2 cents each. Today, coconut
bars cost $1.50 to $2 and are sold
everywhere, including Italian bakeries
and closeout shops. It’s cheaper today
to ask friends and neighbors to bake
them and I have done my share of
pleading. Another special treat was
a 25 cent corn beef sandwich and
10 cent chocolate phosphate at the
Jewish eateries, Sam and Jerry’s or
Herman’s. Today they cost as much

But when an Italian

LaPuma’s was the place
for gelato or spumoni.
The spumoni came in
cups filled with a creamy

mostly for special occasions. Cassata
was the overwhelming favorite.
There seemed to be some hassle that
originated around the Cleveland

Italians have made to life and

A Message from the Publisher
American tradition, Thanksgiving.
This month is a time to step back,
before the holidays are upon us, to
appreciate all the wonderful things we
have. Family is at the top of the list
and being Italian-American solidifies
that. Recently, I attended my cousin
Tony’s wedding. It was great to
see so many family members, and
it got me thinking about what is
important to me. My paternal
grandparents were smiling down
that evening to see all four of their
children, their grandchildren and
italieri, their great-grandchildren in one
Angela Sp ublisher room smiling and laughing. What
