From the Editor & A Message from the Publisher From the Desk of Paul Sciria I was raised in the upper Kinsman neighborhood, and, at the time, I thought everyone was either Italian or Jewish. There was a smattering of other ethnic groups at Alexander Hamilton Junior High and John Adams schools, but in the homestead it was a two party system. When I was looking for sweets and treats, my choices were either Podersky’s next to Guerra’s drugstore and across from St. Cecilia’s, my parish, on E. 151st, Weiderhorn’s, next to Johnny Russo’s drugstore and sit-down soda fountain on E. 154th or LaPuma’s, a few feet west of the church. When my taste buds yearned for coconut bars, Weiderhorn’s and Podersky’s filled the bill. I remember paying 2 cents each. Today, coconut bars cost $1.50 to $2 and are sold everywhere, including Italian bakeries and closeout shops. It’s cheaper today to ask friends and neighbors to bake them and I have done my share of pleading. Another special treat was a 25 cent corn beef sandwich and 10 cent chocolate phosphate at the Jewish eateries, Sam and Jerry’s or Herman’s. Today they cost as much IN THIS ISSUE FROM LA GAZZETTA 03 From the Desk of Paul Sciria 03 A Message from the Publisher NEWS 04 News from Italy 04 A New Look 05 News from the Consulate BOOK REVIEW 05 The Piano Bed FEATURE 06 Little Italy Bakeries Across the U.S 06 Youngstown Memories of Torrone 07 Sicilian Cannoli 07 Matza & Pasta, Italian Traditions 08 Dessert: Sorrento Style 08 Glorious Sponge Cake 09 Come Find the Authentic "Dolce Vita" in Romangna 09 The Best Holiday Gift Basket Websites 10 Liquors & Spirits 10 Italian Dessert Companies 10 Ice Cream, Just the Facts 14 Recipes Across Italy 15 Dolci Regionali 2 November 2014 Local Gazzetta LOCAL NEWS EVENTS IN ITALY 25 Artisan, Taddei, Comes to La Bella Vita 25 Area Business News 26 Local Nonprofit Brings Technology and Entrepreneurship Together 26 Italian Scholars Inspire and Inform 26 God's Everyday Life Power 27 Our Neighborhood Current Events 12 ART A Misal for the Franciscans of Montone 16 HISTORY & CULTURE Seattle ' Shuts' Down Columbus Day for Indigenos Peoples' Day 17 LINGUA ITALIANA Notizie Dall'Italia 18 I Cannoli Siciliani 18 TRAVEL Clifton Mill-ions of Lights! 19 ENTERTAINMENT Zibba & Almalibre 21 PEOPLE Lottie Superhero Design Winner 23 290 Years = 200 Cutting Years 23 CLUB NEWSLETTERS DECEMBER PREVIEW December is a special time for all of us. Yet another delicious option was chocolate ice cream suckers on a stick at Russo’s. If you were lucky, when finished, and your ice cream stick had “Free” printed on it, you didn’t pay for the next one. But when an Italian sweet or treat prevailed, LaPuma’s was the place for gelato or spumoni. The spumoni came in cups filled with a creamy top, and the gelato in colored flat bars; chocolate, white and light green wrapped in tissue-thin paper. Cakes were a real treat and mostly for special occasions. Cassata was the overwhelming favorite. There seemed to be some hassle that originated around the Cleveland Cassata Cake. To some, it was more like strawberry shortcake. For lower Kinsman, Italian favorites were Giamo’s and Barona’s who got their share of Italian/Sicilian customers. Giamo’s, Barona’s and LaPuma’s competed for the wedding cake Paul Sciria, Managing Editor business and tried to out best each other. The fancier and bigger, the better, with the top finished off with different symbols and figurines like bride and groom and sugary flowers.
