The peak of the local harvest season is in hand and like every August , I saunter out to my rather large garden to reap the rewards of my springtime “ fruits of labor .” Each spring , I buy my seeds , save some of last season ’ s pickings , or pilfer from the greenhouses of Billy Fioritto of Munson Township or Dante Fiore of Highland Heights .

I planted zucchini , swiss chard , green bell peppers , cucumbers , beans , strawberries , and tomatoes including San Marzano , Roma , Early Girl and Beefsteak . Summertime had plenty of rain so I sparingly used the hose to dampen the soil .

Keep in mind that my garden is fenced and though I saw deer from time to time in my backyard , I believe my non-powered fence did the trick . All they could do was look but not touch .

What I didn ’ t count on were the rabbits and the birds . I had some very healthy strawberry leafs that I spotted getting bigger . But , the birds noticed

them as well and helped themselves to a healthy dose of Gurney ’ s finest . Next season , I will net the area and see if that saves any berries for me .

As for the rest of my plantings , it was hits and misses . The swiss chard proved to be the most successful . It seems you can pick a ton of the leaves and stems , but , when cooked , you ’ re lucky to get a good healthy portion . You just keep picking right into October so it ’ s worth the effort . Peppers and tomatoes produce like the Cleveland Indians ; sometimes they hit a home run , but many times they strike out because of bottom rot .

As for my fig , peach and nectarine trees , they ’ ve become a lost cause . I guess I don ’ t do the right kind of spraying or cover or bend over my fig tree to protect against winter ’ s icy
