THE HUMAN FACTOR, La variabile umana, directed by Bruno Oliviero, 2013
Presented by the Consulate of Italy in Detroit & NOIA Foundation
In Milan, high finance and high fashion meet up with low morals and lonely lives.
Detective Monaco is tight-lipped and world-weary, deep in his shell since the
death of his wife three years ago. He keeps family photos—like his emotions—
locked up in a drawer. Though he’s a keen analyst and a superb cop, Monaco lacks
THE HUMAN FACTOR. Monaco’s teenage daughter, Linda, is desperate for his
attention, but his attitude toward her is frosty. Coke-fueled murders have become
commonplace on Monaco’s beat, and he wants out. But when a high roller known
to party with underage girls is found dead in a pool of blood, Monaco’s boss orders
him to take the case. When Linda arrives at the station in the back of a patrol
car, Monaco’s closely circumscribed world threatens to unravel completely. Actors
Silvio Orlando (Monaco) and Alice Raffaelli (Linda) are outstanding, performing
a sad tango of father-daughter aloofness and longing.
HANDY, directed by Vincenzo Cosentino, 2013
Martini’s left hand is called “Handle,” while his right hand is known as “Handy.”
Martini relies upon Handle for his creative drive, while Handy is relegated to
the armrest. After decades of being ignored and living with Handle’s mediocrity, Handy does what any sensible hand would do: he quite literally breaks free.
With the help of a venerable writer (the legendary Franco Nero), Handy begins
an enchanting journey across the entire globe that takes him on a journey from
the Pyramids to Hollywood. When Handy meets a gorgeous disembodied hand
named Manicure on a Sicilian beach, she sets his middle finger ablaze. It doesn’t
take the two long to go palm to palm. But as Handy’s ambitions get bigger and
bigger, he realizes he could be responsible for a perilous rebellion: “Handependence
Day.” With adventure, comedy and romance, HANDY is a sweeping epic with
a remarkable protagonist that will take you along for a stunning, hand-affirming
journey. Directed by Bruno Oliviero
SALVO, directed by Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza, 2013
Mafia hit man, Salvo goes about his brutal job without even flinching. Killing has
become second-nature to him. When he breaks into a rival’s home and murders
him, he finds that the target’s sister has witnessed the crime. After realizing she’s
blind, Salvo finds himself conflicted. Though he’s required to execute her, he can’t
seem to finish the deed. For the first time, his conscience kicks in. At the same
time, the girl finds herself faced with a new experience of her own. Her vi
